Rangecast software on the PC has been instructed to automatically launch into service mode on bootup (so the software can operate without a Windows user account being logged in). This mode of operation depends upon third-party XYNT software, but the XYNT service has not been installed on the PC, and Rangecast software does not have sufficient permissions to repair this issue automatically. Therefore manual action is needed to install XYNT. Once installed, XYNT is used to start Rangecast on PCs in the background where it is not possible to automatically start applications at bootup.
This FAQ presumes that the selected configuration is correct -- that the PC should automatically launch Rangecast in the background (service mode) even when the PC is not logged into any Windows user account.
This is only desirable if the PC is unable to automatically launch into a Windows user account after a reboot. (For example, this ability is blocked if the Windows PC requires a username/password to access the desktop, or if a user must press an "I Accept" button to IT Terms of Service. XYNT is a solution to these kinds of issues.)
If the PC *DOES* launch into a Windows user account automatically when rebooted, then installing XYNT is not necessary. In that case, launch Rangecast, press Configuration, wait for the hardware scan to complete, remove the special settings command "boot=2" that tells Rangecast to operate in this special mode, press Save, and relaunch the software.
Installing XYNT sometimes requires system privileges not available to the Rangecast software, requiring user action to execute a command on the PC manually.
1) Stop any Rangecast software that may be running
[FAQ-1088] How to stop Rangecast software on a feed site PC (temporary stop, not decommission)Rangecast software on a feed site PC includes a "watchdog" process that monitors for software faults, and may automatically relaunch the software if it is not closed correctly. The correct way to stop Rangecast is to click the Rangecast icon, and then press the Stop button.
[FAQ-1162] Installing or Uninstalling XYNT as AdministratorWhen installing or uninstalling Rangecast as a service (an unusual mode of operation that lets Rangecast operate at bootup even if the PC cannot automatically launch applications), it is sometimes necessary to run a command in a Windows command window with elevated privileges.
