RANGECAST FEATURES

FEATURES OVERVIEW

Rangecast receives and processes thousands of public safety and commercial two-way radio communications channels for our customers who include TV & radio stations, newspapers, police & fire departments, private security, restoration companies and more.

We record millions of voice communications every week. Every individual transmission is placed in a database, indexed by channel and time. This content can be monitored instantly from anywhere with a Rangecast HTML5 player using any web browser.

All content is recorded into our audio library, so prior communications can be reviewed even while an incident is in progress and no communications will be missed. This important feature is impossible with an ordinary radio-only system. The Rangecast HTML5 player brings a new dimension to monitoring and archiving two-way radio

THE RANGECAST HTML5 PLAYER

Rangecast provides an innovative way to monitor two-way radio communications.

Since the 1960s, the news media, public safety and certain businesses have used police scanners stay informed about public safety incidents in and around their community. But as radio systems have become more complex the scanners of today have become equally complicated to use and master. Additionally, with advanced trunking and digital radio systems, there are thousands more radio channels to monitor than ever before.

Rangecast takes the complexity out of radio monitoring and offers an easy and effective means to monitor and manage the avalanche of radio traffic that is available today.

Rather than trying to listen to banks of radios while tuning around to find radio frequencies and talkgroup channels that are hidden away like needles in haystacks, Rangecast simplifies the entire process by providing a simple to use HTML5 web interface that any news assignment desk editor, photographer, police officer or emergency preparedness staffer can learn in minutes.

With Rangecast, you can easily select the particular channels that you want to hear. You can change these selections at any time, by turning channels on/off on the player interface or switching Views from one county to another or from one group of users (for example all Fire Departments in your region) to another. If several people in your office or in the field are using Rangecast, each of you can independently choose the content that's right for you. You can also jump back in time to replay incidents you may have missed.

The Rangecast HTML5 player offers additional functionality that allows for a flexible experience as well for both beginner as well as advanced users. Multiple screen layouts and designs make it simple to view not only what you're currently listening to, but also see what transmissions are in the queue to soon play. You can manage what you're listening to via a hierarchical structure or minimize the player screen and tuck it up into a small corner of your monitor, and only focus on the agency currently transmitting while you have almost your entire monitor available for other work.

Perhaps best of all, as part of our turnkey solution, a selection of players are built for you with the input from your staff so you have the selection of channels you want right out of the gate.

SIMULTANEOUS AUDIO IS PLAYED IN SEQUENCE
- NO TALKOVER -

With a scanner, whenever there are simultaneous transmissions on two channels you want to monitor, you will surely miss something. The scanner can only receive one signal at a time, and when a broadcast signal is gone, it's gone forever.

Rangecast solves this problem, by recording every transmission.

If you are monitoring multiple channels, and two transmissions on channels of interest to you are simultaneously recorded, the Rangecast HTML5 player will play one while buffering the other. The second transmission isn't be lost, and will be played in its entirety as soon as the first transmission has been played for you.

For this reason, Rangecast provides the user with more complete reception of multiple broadcast channels than would be possible with any scanner.

GOING BACK IN TIME

When listening to a scanner, have you ever wanted to have a second chance to catch an address or other key information? Have you wanted to get up to speed quickly and find out how an incident developed?

With Rangecast, it couldn't be easier. Everything is recorded, and available for instant playback through the same user interface used to monitor live activity. We provide seamless integration of live and archival content, it's all there at the touch of a button.

To see how this works, you can try the Rangecast HTML5 demo player.

Simply drag the oval control on the time bar back. The time bar represents either one hour of time or 24 hours but you can go back as far as (typically) three days in time simply by adjusting the calendar or clock to the left the time bar and then clicking anywhere on the page. The player will instantly jump back in time and begin playing all the radio traffic from the agencies you've selected by first turning unwanted channels off by clicking them red on the Channels Panel.

When listening to past transmissions, the empty periods between each communication ("dead air" time) is automatically removed. You will hear each transmission in sequence, one immediately after the next, until you catch up to the present time.

Rangecast also has an instant replay and loop feature, perfect if you just missed an address for example. Additionally all transmissions can be saved as WAV or OGG files to be used separately at your discretion.

PRIORITY MONITORING

Suppose you are monitoring lots of channels, and buffered playback of simultaneous transmissions has made your "time bar" slip a few minutes into the past. What happens if something is received from a channel of special importance to you? Many users monitor a few critical channels, and want immediate notification of activity on those priority channels. You don't want to wait a few minutes to finish catching up on other signals waiting in the queue for playback on your computer, you want to know about the priority traffic right now.

With Rangecast, you can put selected channels into a "priority mode". Any transmission on a priority channel will be played first, and only if there are none pending will the Rangecast HTML5 player select transmissions for playback from the standard channels.

KEEPING PACE WITH THE CLOCK

If you are monitor enough channels, it can happen that in each minute, there are more than 60 seconds of content available from various channels of interest. With a scanner, when this happens, you would simply miss content randomly - when the scanner is receiving one agency, you won't hear anyone else who is talking, and that content will be gone forever. So if you're using a scanner, you may not even realize how much important content you are missing from the agencies you monitor.

Rangecast offers two features that let you manage the torrent of content made available through the Rangecast HTML5 player.

First, we offer a "monitoring mode" that (when necessary) automatically skips past some transmissions to keep pace with the clock, selectively playing what appear to be the most important transmissions based on criteria such as channel priority level and length of transmission.

Second, we offer a high-speed mode that plays audio files faster than real-time -- even 140% of normal speed is easily understandable, and we offer speeds up to an accelerate 200% of normal speed. The ear adapts to high-speed audio reproduction, and it can become quite natural to hear. This makes it possible to actually listen to much more than 60 seconds of audio in every minute.

RECEIVER SITES

Optimized Sites

Sometimes you want to receive a signal, but it's not possible to get good reception from your location. Perhaps the transmitter is too far away, or on the other side of a mountain. Maybe your office is deep inside a building, where radio signals don't penetrate. Similar problems are encountered by mobile users, who need to monitor signals while driving across varied terrain and wide geographic distances. For various reasons, you may find that you simply can't receive the radio signals that you need to keep aware of what's happening in an area you need to monitor.

If you need real-time situational awareness of events hundreds or thousands of miles away, radio signal detection is so clearly impossible that you would not even consider using a scanner radio.

Rangecast solves all of these problems by separating the radio receiver from the listening device, and using the internet to form a bridge. With Rangecast, you can listen to radio signals on the other side of the globe, with perfect clarity. You can listen in your office, even if you can't even receive your local community fire department, due to poor reception conditions or local interference. All you need is an internet connection.

Unlike internet streaming of audio from a remotely located radio, which is necessarily limited to receiving signals from one location, Rangecast provides the dynamic power of selection and control that you expect from a scanner - while mixing content received from many locations. On the same Rangecast HTML5 player, you can simultaneously listen to channels received from different sites. All the channels of interest are brought together onto a unified user interface, regardless of where they come from.

Each user in your organization can have an independent player design, and choose which channels to monitor, without affecting any other users

Less Radio Equipment Needed

If your company has many people who could benefit from monitoring radio transmissions, Rangecast eliminates the need to purchase dedicated radio equipment for every listener. A single scanner, or cluster of Multisync-coordinated scanners, can distribute audio via internet to a virtually unlimited number of users.

Unlike standard audio streaming, Rangecast technology gives each user the freedom to individually choose particular channels to scan - in effect, providing the power and functionality of a personal scanner, combined with the freedom and simplicity of scanner-free reception via data network.

With our patented Multisync technology, a group of radio scanners are linked together into an efficient signal-capture radio cluster. All scanners monitor the same group of frequencies, but co-ordinate their activity so that a single radio signal will only be received by one scanner - leaving the others free to detect and capture other simultaneous transmissions.

If signing up for access to channels in the Rangecast audio library, where channels are recorded from our scanners, you won't need any radio equipment at all! No more worries about signal quality, antenna placement, or any of the other complications that can come with operating your own radio receiver. The transmissions will simply arrive in your office via internet - signal reception from the cloud!

DOWNLOADING AUDIO

Audio file can be downloaded from the player to the desktop, and even archived online.

After special events, a Rangecast HTML5 player can be configured to bring the listener directly to the start of a pre-recorded series of transmissions. This brings the versatility of the Rangecast HTML5 player to archival content - including dynamic channel selection, easy replay, and the ability to move back and forth in time. In effect, this lets the user put himself into the archived event, and if many channels are involved, select from them to review what happened from many perspectives.

AUTOMATED CONTENT-BASED NOTIFICATION

Sometimes you want to be notified about breaking news, even if no one is actively listening to the scanner. This is possible with Rangecast's voice to text service (a premium option), which runs audio through a transcription engine and analyzes the results to determine whether certain keywords or phrases may be present in the spoken audio. You can use one of our standard lists of keywords, or create your own list. When a possible match is detected, you receive an automated notification (SMS or e-mail) with a link to the Rangecast player, launching to the time of the transmission that triggered the alert, so you can review the communications yourself and determine whether the event may be important to you. This feature is especially useful for businesses that want 24/7 response to breaking news without maintaining a round-the-clock operations center.

With voice to text transcription, you also get a display in the player that shows the transcription of each audio transmission. This makes it possible to visually scan current transmissions by eye, so you can notice important activity without needing to play audio or listen to the full transmissions.
