Rangecast FAQ
[FAQ-1343] Error message: WebSwitch Unresponsive (Code 67)

Page Type: SYMPTOM

OVERVIEW

On PCs configured to use WebSwitch remote power switches (to enable remote or automated rebooting of PCs when necessary), it is expected that the WebSwitch unit will check in with Rangecast at frequent intervals to check if a power cycle is requested. (This is an outbound check only, so the WebSwitch does not need to be visible from outside customer firewalls.) This error means there has been no recent contact from WebSwitch. This could be due to a network or configuration issue.

BACKGROUND

Note: this error code is reported by Rangecast software running on the PC that is supposedly connected to power through the WebSwitch unit. Therefore we know this error code does NOT indicate a loss of power at the WebSwitch, since that would also remove power from the PC, making it impossible for this error code to be reported.

METHOD

1. Contact your Rangecast customer representative with the serial number on the WebSwitch unit, so that we can verify that the correct WebSwitch serial number has been entered into our database as associated with this PC. (If the serial number was copied incorrectly, that would explain the expected WebSwitch not being in communication.)

2. There was an issue with the product's use of DNS in 2018 that resulted in units in the field losing their ability to connect with Rangecast. The FAQ cited below describes how to restore service in that situation (at the time of writing, there are still units in the field that have not been restored to service since this incident)

[FAQ-1261] Refreshing DNS cache on WebSwitch units

When it's necessary to change the IP address of the service supporting WebSwitch (at admin.rangecast.com), we've found that the WebSwitch units may not update their DNS resolution, breaking communication with the units until a DNS refresh is forced by either power-cycling the WebSwitch or (this can be done remotely) accessing its web interface. This is a rarely needed action.

3. Check the network configuration settings on the WebSwitch, as described below. These instructions are for a fresh setup; it is likely that the LAN IP address of the product will be different from what is given here. There have been reports indicating that at least some WebSwitches may have lost configuration settings after shipment for an unknown reason (perhaps as simple as triggering a factory reset.)

[FAQ-1229] WebSwitch setup (remote power switch)

To setup a WebSwitch remote power switch, first set configuration options for the device via a web browser, then connect the device to your PC, and finally associate the serial number of the device with the PC.
