Rangecast FAQ
[FAQ-1333] Error message: PC Storage Nearly Full (Code 73)

Page Type: SYMPTOM

OVERVIEW

The storage device on the feed site PC appears to have under 500 MB of free space. This could be an indication that some process is consuming storage space, and if fully depleted the Rangecast software would cease to operate.

BACKGROUND

If the computer is configured in some unusual way (for example, not using C: as the primary storage device), this could be a false alarm. The test for this error condition is not meant to be fully exhaustive for covering every conceivable PC configuration.

Similarly, if the PC is operating with some unusually low capacity storage device, this could be a false alarm. Rangecast is a compact program that requires very little storage capacity (certainly nowhere close to 500 MB!) However, since a problem consuming storage capacity would be filling disk capacity at an unknown rate, the error threshold was set at 500 MB to ensure sufficient advance warning to take action before a problem (whatever it is) would be likely to drop capacity to zero.

METHOD

Nothing in Rangecast software is expected to consume a significant amount of storage capacity, or consume additional capacity over time. A typical Rangecast installation running for years uses less than 200 MB of total storage space, trivially small in a world where hard drives are typically 1000 times larger (so Rangecast is using only 0.1% of the PCs storage capacity.)

Therefore, if something on a feed site PC is consuming storage capacity and driving the free space towards zero, it is NOT normal or expected behavior. The first step is to check the total size of various folders on the PC, in an attempt to find where the space is being used.

Rangecast software operates almost entirely within the SENDER folder on the desktop. You can right-click on that file and select Properties to see how much space it uses (Rangecast does not store any temporary files on the PC outside the SENDER folder.)

Elements of Rangecast outside the SENDER folder include (1) installation of third-party software packages Anydesk and sometimes XYNT, (2) various shortcuts on the desktop, (3) sometimes workfiles left on the desktop during maintenance (but are not part of the actively running system), and (4) a single shortcut outside the desktop that makes Rangecast launch automatically. All of these elements are vanishingly small in size, and almost certainly not the cause of the problem.

Therefore, if disk storage capacity is being driven towards zero, what is necessary is hunting around the PC in search of files. In a folder view, it is usually possible to hover over folders to see the size of their contents. Possible culprits may be found in C:Windows/Temp, since this is a place where temporary files may be stored by various programs. There are other possibilities, of course.

In one situation, the PC storage was apparently being consumed in some folder that the Rangecast user account in Windows did not have permission to access or view. It may not be possible to determine the problem without assistance from IT.
