Rangecast FAQ
[FAQ-1326] Use of Windows Administrator permissions

Page Type: REFERENCE

OVERVIEW

There are a few steps in initial PC setup requiring Windows administrative permissions, related to device driver installation, changing the password of remote desktop service, and registering Rangecast software to automatically launch when the PC boots. In addition, when the PC is in service, it is useful to have administrative permissions for maintenance related to these three issues, and also the ability to run certain Windows diagnostic or repair functions that require administrative permissions.

REFERENCE

During initial PC install, Rangecast requires Windows administrative permissions for the following three tasks:

1) Running third-party device driver installation software necessary for communication with the external hardware interface connecting the PC to the scanner radios,

2) Changing the password required for remote access by the Anydesk remote desktop software (the initial default password should not be considered secure),

3) Registering the Rangecast software to automatically launch when the PC boots up (necessary since without this step, the PC will require manual attention to restore service after any power outage or Windows issue requiring a reboot.)

During normal operation, Rangecast sometimes needs administrative access to address issues related to (1) or (3). In addition, for ordinary maintenance, we sometimes need to run certain diagnostic or repair elements of the Windows operating system which require administrative permissions.

A particular configuration issue that sometimes needs administrative permission after initial PC setup relates to the Windows user account context on the PC. If Windows cannot be set to automatically boot into a specific Windows user account, the way Rangecast needs to register with Windows to automatically launch may need to be changed. This issue is often not recognized until hardware is installed, and so an administrative action may be needed at that time.
